Johann Georg Grobe was an organist who lived in the late 17th century. He is most well-known for being the copyist of a manuscript, the Grobe Tablature, which is now lost.

Grobe Tablature

Grobe was the copyist of a manuscript dated 1675. It was written in german tablature and contained works by Dietrich Buxtehude, Wolfgang Carl Briegel, Johann Rudolph Ahle, and Johann Jakob Froberger.

The manuscript came into the possession of a certain Organisten Hildebrand in Mühlhausen, Thuringia. After Hildebrand's death before 1867, the manuscript and other possessions were sold to a local butcher as scrap paper.

In 1838, the manuscript had been copied by Ritter in Madeburg. This manuscript was still in Ritter's possession when it was consulted by Philipp Spitta for his edition of the organ works of Dietrich Buxtehude. Afterwards, this copy may have been stored in the Benedictine monestary in Beuron (D-BEU). However, this copy has also now been lost. We are left with only a few pieces transmitted in various critical editions from when the copy was known.
